Muellers inaction over Trump has let the US down. Why is he holding back? | Simon Tisdall

His reluctance to indict the president has only deepened the mystery he was hired to solve, says foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall Robert Mueller has a reputation as a straight-shooting, play-it-by-the-book sort of guy. That changed this week. The special counsels stated justifications for not accusing Donald Trump of obstruction of justice appear convoluted and legally dubious. Mueller was a man hired to solve a mystery. His odd decision to take refuge in questionable precedents, and thereby effectively duck the issue, has only compounded it. His two-year investigation was admirable in many ways. Unlike similar exercises in the past, such as Kenneth Starrs 1990s inquiry into Bill Clinton, he kept his counsel, did not leak to the media, and completed …

Louisiana sends ‘heartbeat’ abortion ban bill to governor’s desk

(CNN)Louisiana lawmakers voted Wednesday to ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detectable — as early as six weeks into a pregnancy — with no exceptions for rape or incest. The bill does not make exceptions for instances of rape or incest. Democratic state Rep. Ted James introduced an amendment to include those exceptions, arguing that “we are not that important to make that decision for a woman who’s been raped,” but the move failed 35-67. The bill would allow for abortions preventing a pregnant woman’s death or “serious risk of the substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function,” and would require doctors who perform abortions under such circumstances to specify their eligibility in writing. Abortions on “medically …

Israel will hold new elections after Netanyahu fails to build coalition

Jerusalem (CNN)Israel will hold new national elections in late summer after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to put together a coalition government from the parties elected to parliament on April 9th. Less than two months after what seemed like a clear victory for Netanyahu in the April 9thelections, the long-time Israeli leader backed a move to dissolve the 21st Knesset, in a last-ditch attempt to break deadlocked negotiations between the parties. Talks had become stuck over a proposed draft law, which would conscript more ultra-Orthodox Jewish youth into the military. The ultra-Orthodox parties demanded changes to the bill, while former Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman wanted it passed with no changes at all. Netanyahu, who has handled difficult coalition negotiations in …
